What is the difference between Internet Service Provider (ISP) and Web Hosting Provider (WHP)?

An ISP such as America On Line (AOL), or Comcast Cable or Verizon, etc., provides access to all the features of the Internet, such as browsing the world wide web (www.) and e-mail. They provide the dial-up or other internet connections such as DSL, etc. WHP are providers that allow you to post your web site on the Internet. They also provide the means for search engines to locate you on the world wide web. Think of it as a filing cabinet accessible over the web where you allow users to open drawers to access information. The user pays for the service to access information over the web and you pay to post your information for them to see. Let’s take the filing cabinet analogy one step further and say this is in a store with a front door and a back door. The web uses what is called a protocol (like a language computers speak) the two most popular are “http” and “ftp”. To “your store” there is a front door “http” which you see when you type in your address to surf the web and there is the back door “ftp” (file transfer protocol) which allows developers to transfer files to your server for display in your “store window” which is your web site. Kind of like the kitchen and the dining room of a nice restaurant.
